Sweet Home (season 1) review
In the wake of devastating tragedy, a somber tale unfolds in the heart of chaos. Cha Hyun-soo(Song Kang), a despondent teen, seeks solace in the Green House apartment following the tragic loss of his family. However, little does he know that fate has different plans for him and the other residents of the building. As an apocalypse unleashes its wrath, a relentless horde of hungry monsters descends upon them. Worse still, those attacked by these creatures become infected and transform into monsters themselves, intensifying the struggle for survival.
Within the decaying walls of the Green House, monsters breach the defenses, and the once-safe haven becomes a battleground of fear and desperation. As some residents succumb to the infection, it falls upon the survivors to fortify their sanctuary and make difficult choices for the sake of the group’s survival.
At the center of the ordeal emerges Lee Do-Hyun, a steadfast medical student thrust into a leadership role. He must plan safety measures, ration food, and make tough decisions to protect his fellow survivors. Simultaneously, he assumes the role of a silent yet fiercely protective brother to Eun-yu, whose brash and unyielding demeanor masks a hidden grudge towards him.
Among the survivors, Seo Yi-kyeong (Lee Si-young ), a former firefighter with exceptional martial arts skills, becomes an invaluable asset. Determined to uncover the truth behind her fiancé’s mysterious disappearance, she suspects a clandestine government testing mission related to the monstrous invasion.
Amidst the turmoil, Pyeon Sang-wook, an enigmatic outcast, emerges as a figure with his own mysterious mission, veiled behind the scars on his face and the facade of a gangster.
In this nightmarish reality, the infected turn into monsters that embody their deepest desires. However, a glimmer of hope remains, as some individuals with pure intentions can resist the darkness within, gaining superhuman strength to aid the group. Pyeon Sang-wook and Cha Hyun-soo, the once suicidal teen, exemplify this phenomenon, becoming unexpected pillars of strength for the survivors.
While the horror of the monster invasion sets the stage for a gripping narrative, the series delves into the intricate personal stories of its characters. As heroes emerge, others reveal their true colors as troublemakers, further complicating the already dire situation.
Despite its grim premise, “Surviving Shadows” isn’t solely confined to the horror genre. It offers a diverse array of underlying plots, providing engaging storylines for characters big and small. For those who appreciate action-packed sequences and shocking twists, the series delivers on both counts. However, its emotional depth and endearing drama will captivate viewers regardless of their horror preferences.
The title itself, “Surviving Shadows,” holds a poignant significance in the midst of this nightmarish reality. It comes to life in a heartwarming scene that underscores the enduring human spirit and resilience amidst unimaginable adversity.
Season 1 brings heart-wrenching goodbyes, leaving viewers yearning for more. With numerous untold storylines awaiting exploration, audiences eagerly await the next season, eagerly anticipating what awaits the valiant survivors in their quest for survival and redemption.
