Transformers: Rise of the Beasts review(2023)
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” offers a refreshing take on the franchise, surpassing Michael Bay’s previous installments in terms of narrative focus and visual coherence. While it doesn’t reach the heights of “Bumblebee,” it manages to captivate audiences, especially long-time fans, by bringing beloved characters to life, including Autobots, Maximals from the “Transformers: Beast Wars” TV series, and intergalactic villains serving the planet-gobbling Unicron.
What sets “Rise of the Beasts” apart is its surprising care for the human characters, something that has been lacking in previous films. The screenplay allows Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback to create characters that audiences can actually care about. The movie begins in 1994, shortly after the events of “Bumblebee,” and introduces Noah Diaz, a former military electronics expert, and Elena, an artifacts expert, both facing societal challenges as young people of color.
The hunt for the Transwarp Key thrusts Noah and Elena into the world of the Transformers. The back-and-forth banter between Noah and the wisecracking sports car Mirage, voiced by Pete Davidson, adds an enjoyable dynamic to the film. Notable voice actors like Michelle Yeoh, Ron Perlman, and Peter Dinklage add depth to the Maximals and Terrorcons.
While the action and special effects are impressive, the climactic battle between Transformers lacks real stakes, as viewers already know the outcome and that there will be more movies in the franchise. Nevertheless, the film manages to provide an engaging and nostalgic experience for both die-hard fans and casual audiences.
In conclusion, “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” strikes a balance between the classic elements of giant space robots and human characters, making it a better offering than many of the previous Transformers films. Steven Caple Jr.’s direction and the screenplay’s focus on human characters contribute to the film’s success, setting it apart from the chaotic and less coherent entries directed by Michael Bay. While it may not surpass the charm of “Bumblebee,” it still delivers an enjoyable cinematic experience for Transformers fans and general moviegoers alike.
